CUTTING

General Cutting Recommendations • When possible, it is best to keep the protective masking in place while cutting to protect the finished surface from scratches. We recommend performing trial cuts to ensure accuracy and evaluate the tool setting and cutting speeds. • After performing your cuts, it is best to deburr the edges. • Take care to keep working surfaces clear of metal chips and shavings, which may penetrate and scratch the panel surface. • Wear lightweight cotton gloves to help avoid cutting your hands. Follow equipment guidelines provided by equipment manufacturers. Straight Cuts • The most common method for making a straight cut is to use a panel saw, or CNC router. • Straight cuts may also be made with a radial arm saw, table saw or hand-held circular saw. Cutting Shapes • Cutting shapes is commonly done with a CNC router, jigsaw, or band saw. Table Saws/Circular Saws • Use industrial type equipment with a metal carbide blade. The higher the number of teeth, the smoother the cut. • Blades should have circular or angled teeth, alternate beveled, triple ground with the tooth gap wall rounded. • We recommend cutting speeds of 5,500 RBM and feeds of 16” per second when possible. • To ensure a straight cut, claim a straight edge to the panel. • When clamping the panel, allow for extra space for the blade thickness. Panel Saws • Panel saws are an effective cutting solution and save on space. The panel saw blade should be the same type as used for table saws. Reciprocating Saws • If center cuts are required, place a foam pad under the substrate with the blade cutting into the foam. • The panel should be secured with double facing tape. When clamping between jaws, protect the panel against damage. • Blades should be high speed steel with hook or circular teeth with alternate angles. Band Saws • Band saws are recommended when cutting irregular shapes or curves. Blades should be tempered steel with skip teeth designed for non-ferrous and ferrous materials spaced at a minimum of 10 teeth per inch.
